Description

The industrial grade cushioned abrasive papers in this kit take the guess work out of polishing BSA axles and other axles that have had flaws removed with file. The kit consists of one each of the following 4 x 3 inch papers, plus instructions. Note that the last two papers are much finer than any commercially available sandpaper, and are finer than pumice. One set of axle polishing papers is enough to polish 8 axles.

  • 30 micron – ~400 grit
  • 15 micron – ~600 grit
  • 8 micron – ~1350 grit
  • 5 micron – ~1500 grit
  • 3 micron – ~2500 grit

To polish axles, cut each paper into 1/4 inch strips, 3 inch long (there will be 16 strips per paper). Then fasten a drill in place using a Drill Mount, vise, or clamp.

  1. Insert an axle into the chuck of the drill, and start the drill.
  2. Use a file to remove the ridges on the axle head and shaft (if present).
  3. Dip a strip of 30-micron paper in water and apply it to the spinning axle for at least 10 seconds. Polish the portion of the axle on which the wheel will spin, and on the inside of the axle head.
  4. Repeat step 3 with a second strip of the same paper.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 using the 15, 8, 5, and 3-micron papers in order. Use two strips of each paper type per axle and don’t forget to dip each strip in water.
  6. Repeat the above steps for each axle.
