Steel Cylinder Weight - 3 ounces

These Steel Cylinder Weights are an environmentally friendly, inexpensive weight for pine derby cars. They are more dense and less expensive than zinc weights, but not as dense as lead or tungsten.

Here is a comparison of the relative density of weight types. Density is measured in grams/cm3. A higher number means that the weight is more dense, and will take less space on a pine derby car.

Density Type Cost Per Ounce Comment
7.0Zinc$1.82Sold under the brand name "PineCar"
7.7Steel$0.98
11.3Lead$0.74Toxic if taken internally
18.0 to

Tungsten$2.95 to

The density varies depending on the amount of other metals included in the alloy. The cost varies based on the form.

How to Use this Product

Each Steel Cylinder Weight measures 1/2 inch long by 3/8 inch in diameter, and weighs 0.25 ounces each. Your 3 ounce shipment of Steel Cylinders Weights contains twelve cylinders.

These weights are generally applied to pine derby cars by drilling holes in the side, rear, and/or bottom of the car with a 25/64 inch drill bit (or similar). The weights are then glued in place with epoxy. These Steel Cylinder Weights are very hard, so do not plan to drill or cut them. Instead, use an alternate method to make fine adjustments such as tungsten putty, tungsten beads, screws, etc.
