The Advanced Speed Kits include the items you need to reach maximum velocity when using either prepared or unprepared wheels and axles. Each kit contains the following items:
- Basic Speed Kit Items (see above)
- Pro-Hub Tool - For preparing wheel hubs
- Mini-File - For removing flaws on nail-type axles
- Pro-Wheel Mandrel - For mounting the wheels in the chuck of a drill to facilitate removing wheel flaws.

To achieve top speed, your car must weigh-in at the maximum allowable weight (generally 5 ounces). Lead weight is approximately 1.8 times heavier than the 'lead-free' weight sold by other vendors, thus it allows you greater freedom in designing your car. An added advantage is that lead is quite soft, thus it can be easily shaped to fit in the best location on the car. Click Here for a weight comparison chart.

Caution - Lead is toxic if taken internally. Therefore, keep lead away from your mouth, wash hands after handling, avoid use around food or food preparation areas, and properly dispose of any lead fragments. Also, do not melt lead as the fumes are toxic and the lead can pop and splatter, causing eye and skin injuries.
Due to its very high density Tungsten is an excellent weighting material for pine derby cars. Only gold, platinum, and a few other rare and expensive metals have a similar density. Tungsten is about 1.7 times heavier than lead and 3.2 times heavier than the no-lead weight often used on pine derby cars, thus it allows a tremendous amount of freedom in the car design. Due to the greater density, we recommend that you use lead or tungsten weights for you car. However, if you need a quick 2 ounces, these underbody plates can be quickly attached to the bottom of a car with the supplied screws.
To achieve top speed, your axles and wheel bores must be polished to a mirror-like finish. To create this finish, you need some serious polishing material
- Axle Polishing Kit - The industrial grade cushioned abrasive papers in this kit take the guess work out of polishing axles as they are designed for polishing metal to a high shine. The kit consists of one each of the following 4"x3" papers, plus instructions. Note that the last two papers are much finer than any commercially available sandpaper, and are finer than pumice. One set of axle polishing papers is enough to polish 8 axles.
- 30 micron - ~400 grit
- 15 micron - ~600 grit
- 8 micron - ~1350 grit
- 5 micron - ~1500 grit
- 3 micron - ~2500 grit
- Wheel Bore Polish - When used with our Pro-Bore Polisher, this industrial grade product will easily and safely remove microscopic pits and burrs inside the wheel bore. It is water soluble, plastic safe, and polishes to a one micron finish.

- Dry Lubricants - We offer Max-V-LubeTM and Tube-O-Lube:
- Max-V-Lube is a proprietary blend of high-purity, natural flake dry graphite. Max-V-Lube offers superior performance for pine derby cars.
- Tube-O-Lube is a top-quality dry graphite.
- Thin Film Lubricants - We offer both 100 and NyOil II:
- Krytox 100 - An ultra-low viscosity, highly-refined, synthetic thin-film lubricant from Dupont. It is plastic-safe and lasts longer than graphite under most conditions.
- NyOil II - A low viscosity synthetic thin-film lubricant. It is plastic-safe and lasts longer than graphite under most conditions.

"Max-V-Lube is a superior graphite for pine derby cars. We performed multiple controlled tests including inclined slide tests, weighted-wheel spin tests, and track tests. In all cases Max-V-Lube outperformed other graphite lubes. Therefore we highly recommend Max-V-Lube for your race. However, we are continuing to offer Tube-O-Lube as a low-cost option.
When applied properly, Krytox 100 and NyOil II are less messy and easier to use than graphite. Just make sure that non-dry lubes are allowed in your race, and then apply the lube per the included instructions. Krytox 100 has a lower-viscosity than NyOil II. Thus, less care must be taken to remove excess oil (excess oil not only makes a mess, but it also slows down the car!)." |
