I spoke with the owners of all of the top cars in the race, and they all followed the guidelines in "Speed to the Finish".
My 12 year old son built this car on his own using the guidelines in Maximum Velocity! It was a photo finish with his car just a whisker behind the winning car!
A failed experiment. If you look at the picture of the car, you will see that the pyramid weights are not centered on the car. Thus, the car was heavier on one side and would not go straight. Oh well, there's always next year!
A tough year, but no excuses. The competition increased significantly, and the club switched to the PineCar kits with solid rod axles. These proved to be a challenge. My consolation is that all of the winning families participated in our workshop!
My wife wanted to enter a car in the Outlaw Division this year. So I built this three-wheeled snake. I can't take credit for the idea, as it was inspired by a photo I found on the web (if you know the name of the original designer, please let me know). The car was the fastest in the race, but was unstable. On the last heat it jumped the track, so it ended up in second place.
After the race I found out that by time (not points), the car was third place. But due to the heat mix (it raced the two fastest cars more than other cars), the points scoring method placed it fifth.
This was actually the 2nd fastest car, but it jumped the track on one run resulting in third place overall. Oh well, that's the breaks.
With Maximum Velocity! booklets and supplies you can build a pinewood derby car that reaches
